Self-sponsorship residence permit (Investor) — NPRA

NPRA publishes a Self-sponsorship Residence Permit and Re-entry Visa service for foreign investors. Official required documents include the company’s memorandum and commercial register indicating ownership/partnership with a share of no less than BHD 100,000; evidence of a stable income of BHD 500 or more; commercial register copy; company and personal bank statements; Bahrain medical insurance; residential lease and electricity bill; certificate of good conduct; and passport valid more than 6 months. Permits may be issued for 2, 5, or 10 years with published NPRA fees. Apply via the eGovernment channels listed on npra.gov.bh. Always re-verify the live document list before filing.

Min. capital

BHD 100,000 (share)

Best for: Foreign shareholders in a Bahrain-registered enterprise who can document ≥ BHD 100,000 share and stable income evidence.

NPRA document list: share must be no less than BHD 100,000, plus evidence of stable income of BHD 500 or more. This is the published self-sponsorship investor service threshold — confirm on npra.gov.bh before remitting capital.

Investment options

  • Ownership/partnership share ≥ BHD 100,000 evidenced in MoA and commercial register
  • Stable income evidence ≥ BHD 500 (as NPRA lists)
  • Company and personal bank statements (recent 3 months per NPRA list)
  • Residence durations of 2, 5, or 10 years with NPRA-published fees

Eligibility

  • Appear as owner/partner on the commercial register with qualifying share
  • Submit NPRA-listed documents (insurance, lease, electricity, good conduct, passport)
  • Application by guarantor or authorized person as NPRA requires
  • Pay application and residence issuance fees within stated deadlines

Process timeline

  1. 1

    Form / update the company

Obtain or amend Commercial Registration via Sijilat with documented share capital.

  2. 2

    Assemble NPRA pack

MoA, CR, bank statements, income evidence, insurance, housing proofs.

  3. 3

    File self-sponsorship

Apply on eGovernment / NPRA channels; pay fees on approval timelines.

  4. 4

    CPR & renew

Collect residency credentials and renew at 2/5/10-year cadence as issued.

Family

Dependent sponsorship is commonly available for residence holders — confirm current NPRA family rules and fees for your permit type.

Work rights

Investor self-sponsorship supports living and managing your business. Separate LMRA work-permit rules can still apply depending on activity — verify with LMRA.

Route to PR

Multi-year renewable self-sponsorship is not the same as Golden Residency. Longer 10-year investor permits still require compliance and renewal fees.

Route to citizenship

Bahraini citizenship is exceptional and not a standard outcome of investor residence. Dual nationality with Pakistan needs separate legal advice.

Pros

  • Published NPRA share floor (BHD 100,000) and income evidence rule
  • Choice of 2 / 5 / 10-year durations
  • Popular operating base for Pakistani traders serving GCC markets
  • Relatively accessible company-formation ecosystem (Sijilat)

Watch-outs

  • Share documentation must match Sijilat/CR records exactly
  • Fees and document lists change — use npra.gov.bh, not agent PDFs alone
  • Banking KYC and source-of-funds checks apply to Pakistani capital

Golden Residency — property owners

NPRA and Bahrain Golden Residency materials describe Golden Residency for foreigners owning real estate in Bahrain. Official required documents include a clear copy of the ownership title deed with property value not less than BHD 130,000 (NPRA; also stated as total personal share value ≥ BHD 130,000 at purchase on goldenresidency.gov.bh), valid Bahrain medical insurance, six-month bank statement, and passport valid more than 6 months. NPRA describes Golden Residency as permanent residency subject to a standard administrative fee of BHD 300 every 10 years (plus a small application fee). Verify freehold eligibility for the specific property type/location before purchase.

Min. capital

BHD 130,000 (property)

Best for: Buyers of qualifying Bahrain property who want long-term/permanent-style residency without building a company first.

NPRA: ownership title deed with property value not less than BHD 130,000. Golden Residency eligibility text also frames total personal share value ≥ BHD 130,000 at purchase (one or multiple properties). Confirm on npra.gov.bh / goldenresidency.gov.bh.

Investment options

  • One or more properties with combined personal share value ≥ BHD 130,000 at purchase
  • Title deed evidence as NPRA lists
  • Valid Bahrain medical insurance and 6-month bank statement
  • Permanent residency character with BHD 300 administrative fee every 10 years (NPRA fee table)

Eligibility

  • Property ownership meeting the BHD 130,000 threshold
  • Documents on the NPRA Golden Residency property-owner service page
  • Apply via eGovernment / official Golden Residency channels

Process timeline

  1. 1

    Confirm freehold eligibility

Verify the unit can be owned by a foreign national at the required value.

  2. 2

    Purchase & obtain title deed

Complete transfer and keep purchase-value evidence.

  3. 3

    File Golden Residency

Submit NPRA documents and pay fees within stated deadlines.

  4. 4

    Maintain status

Keep insurance and pay the 10-year administrative fee when due.

Family

Confirm dependent inclusion rules on goldenresidency.gov.bh / NPRA for property-owner Golden Residency.

Work rights

Official FAQs note Golden Residency holders generally still need an LMRA work permit to work. Residence ≠ automatic unrestricted employment.

Route to PR

NPRA describes Golden Residency as permanent residency with a recurring 10-year administrative fee. This is still not Bahraini citizenship.

Route to citizenship

Citizenship remains exceptional. Property purchase does not equal a Bahraini passport.

Pros

  • Published BHD 130,000 property threshold on NPRA
  • Permanent residency framing with transparent admin fee
  • Useful for Pakistani families seeking a GCC base with property ownership

Watch-outs

  • Not all properties are foreign-freehold eligible
  • Work still typically needs LMRA permission
  • Service charges and liquidity risk apply

Operating path

Company formation + CR + LMRA / NPRA residence

The practical path for many Pakistani traders is: register a company via Sijilat (Ministry of Industry & Commerce), obtain a Commercial Registration (CR), then secure residence through Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) processes and NPRA security/residency issuance. Capital and activity requirements depend on the legal form and licensed activity — where a published floor is unclear for a specific activity, verify on bahrain.bh, Sijilat, and LMRA rather than inventing a number. Investor self-sponsorship (BHD 100,000 share) and Golden Residency (property) are separate published products described above.

Min. capital

Activity-dependent — verify on Sijilat / bahrain.bh

Best for: Founders who need to trade or provide services from Bahrain and will hold CR ownership compatible with investor or employee residence categories.

Do not assume a single federal company-capital floor for all activities. For the NPRA investor self-sponsorship product, share ≥ BHD 100,000 is published. For other LMRA categories, confirm current requirements on official portals before transferring funds.

Investment options

  • Sijilat company registration and Commercial Registration (CR)
  • LMRA expatriate management / work-permit processes as applicable
  • NPRA residency card (CPR) issuance after clearances
  • Optional later Golden Residency if property criteria are met

Eligibility

  • Approved CR for the intended activity
  • LMRA and NPRA clearances as required for the visa type
  • Office address, medical fitness, and passport validity per official checklists

Process timeline

  1. 1

    Choose activity & entity

Confirm foreign ownership rules for your activity on official MIC / Sijilat guidance.

  2. 2

    Register on Sijilat

Obtain CR, lease/address, and corporate bank account readiness.

  3. 3

    LMRA + NPRA residence

File the correct investor/employee category; complete medicals and CPR.

  4. 4

    Operate & renew

Keep CR, LMRA, and residence renewals current.

Family

Residence holders may sponsor dependents subject to NPRA/LMRA rules — confirm income and housing evidence.

Work rights

Tied to LMRA authorization and CR activity. Do not work outside the approved scope.

Route to PR

Ordinary company residence is renewable. Golden Residency is the published permanent-style product (property/other eligible categories).

Route to citizenship

Not available through ordinary CR + residence. Citizenship is exceptional.

Pros

  • Established route for Pakistani traders and services firms
  • Digital company registration via Sijilat
  • Can combine with NPRA investor self-sponsorship when share thresholds are met

Watch-outs

  • Capital floors vary by activity — verify officially; do not invent
  • Agent packages often omit ongoing CR and LMRA compliance costs
  • Source-of-funds documentation from Pakistan is essential for banking

Golden Residency (property) Property ≥ BHD 130,000 Permanent (fee every 10 yrs) LMRA work permit still typically needed
Company CR + LMRA residence Activity-dependent (verify) Renewable with CR Tied to approved activity

Route to PR & citizenship

Bahrain distinguishes multi-year investor residence, Golden Residency (permanent-style), and nationality. Citizenship is not a normal business outcome.

Golden Residency permanence

NPRA describes Golden Residency as permanent residency with a recurring administrative fee every 10 years. Maintain insurance and fee compliance.

Investor permits renew

Self-sponsorship investor permits are issued for fixed multi-year terms and must be renewed with updated CR and financial evidence.

Citizenship

Bahraini nationality is exceptional. Do not purchase property or form a CR expecting a passport.

Work permits

Golden Residency FAQs indicate holders generally still need LMRA work authorization to be employed. Confirm your case on official pages.

After you arrive

Operational checklist once the visa is granted.

  1. 1 Collect CPR / residency credentials via NPRA processes
  2. 2 Keep Commercial Registration active on Sijilat
  3. 3 Open personal and corporate bank accounts with full KYC
  4. 4 Arrange Bahrain medical insurance (often required for filings)
  5. 5 If hiring: register and comply with LMRA rules
  6. 6 Maintain lease and electricity evidence used in residence files
  7. 7 Map tax and banking reporting between Bahrain and Pakistan

Pakistan founder checklist

Practical prep before you book consulate appointments or move capital.

  • Decide investor self-sponsorship vs Golden property vs operating CR residence
  • For investor NPRA route, document share ≥ BHD 100,000 on MoA/CR
  • For Golden Residency, verify freehold eligibility and BHD 130,000 title value
  • Register via Sijilat and keep CR in good standing
  • Prepare attested Pakistani police clearance and civil documents
  • Document source of funds for remittances and Bahrain bank KYC
  • Budget LMRA/NPRA fees and medical insurance from day one
  • If you need to work as an employee, confirm LMRA permit rules even with Golden Residency
  • Re-read npra.gov.bh and bahrain.bh before filing — do not invent capital floors
